If you’re a lover of the great outdoors and have a passion for fine food, then Canada’s Véloroute Gourmande (The Gourmet Route) is an adventure you won’t want to miss. Covering about 250 kilometers (~150 miles)  between the vibrant cities of Montreal and Sherbrooke, this cycling route offers an immersive experience through the heart of Quebec’s Eastern Townships and the Montérégie region. Whether you’re an avid cyclist or a casual rider, the Véloroute Gourmande combines breathtaking landscapes, cultural immersion, and an abundance of gourmet delights into one unforgettable journey.

Why Véloroute Gourmande is a Must-Visit

Imagine winding your way through charming small towns, picturesque vineyards, lush farmlands, and artisanal food producers, all while taking in the spectacular scenery of Quebec's countryside. The Véloroute Gourmande isn't just a cycling path, it’s a celebration of local gastronomy, where foodies can indulge in farm-to-table experiences, vineyard tastings, and markets brimming with local produce. This route is perfect for those seeking an active holiday with plenty of stops for rest, relaxation, and indulgence.

Cycling Highlights Along the Route

The Véloroute Gourmande’s well-marked trails take you through a mix of scenic vistas, including riverside paths and countryside lanes. The route is accessible for cyclists of all levels, with several sections offering paved, flat surfaces, while others present more moderate challenges with rolling hills. Regardless of your skill level, the stops along the way are the true highlights, where your taste buds will enjoy as much adventure as your legs!

1. Montreal and the Montérégie Region

Your journey begins in Montreal, the largest city in Quebec and a vibrant cultural hub known for its unique blend of European charm and modern North American energy. Situated on an island in the Saint Lawrence River, Montreal boasts stunning architecture, from historic Old Montreal to the contemporary design of Downtown. Renowned for its festivals, like the Montreal International Jazz Festival, and its diverse culinary scene, including its famous bagels, the city offers something for everyone. Rue St. Denis has always had a special place in my heart...

Immediately outside of Montreal you'll enter the Montérégie region, known as the "garden of Quebec" for its fertile farmlands and fruit orchards. Cycling through this region is a feast for the senses, with numerous opportunities to stop at local farms, cideries, and orchards. Be sure to visit some of the region’s celebrated apple orchards and taste freshly pressed cider, or try locally made cheeses and jams.

Gastronomy tip: Stop by the Cidrerie Michel Jodoin in Rougemont, one of the most famous cideries in the region, to enjoy a glass of sparkling apple cider while overlooking the orchards.

2. Bromont and the Estrie Region

After the first day of cycling, you'll likely have left the Montérégie region and entered the Estrie region where the remainder of your journey will take place. In this region you will pass near to Bromont. Known for its stunning landscapes, the town of Bromont offers a combination of historic charm and gastronomic excellence. Take a break from cycling to explore Bromont’s Old Village and visit its many cafes, bakeries, and local shops. The town is also home to several wineries, where you can enjoy tastings of Quebec’s finest wines.

Gastronomy tip: Make time for a wine-tasting experience at Domaine Les Brome, where you can sip on local vintages while enjoying panoramic views of the vineyards and surrounding hills.

3. The Eastern Townships

As you cycle deeper into the Eastern Townships, you’ll be surrounded by breathtaking natural beauty, from rolling hills to peaceful lakes and forests. This area is a true foodie haven, with an array of artisan producers offering everything from local chocolates and cheeses to honey and maple syrup. The town of Magog is a particularly charming stop, with its bustling local markets, bistros, and cafes.

Gastronomy tip: Visit the Abbaye de Saint-Benoît-du-Lac, where the monks produce award-winning cheeses, jams, and other delicacies. Their blue cheese is especially famous, and you can stock up on local treats to fuel the rest of your ride.

4. Sherbrooke

The final stop on the Véloroute Gourmande, Sherbrooke, is the largest city in the Eastern Townships and an excellent place to end your cycling adventure. Known for its rich cultural scene, Sherbrooke boasts lively restaurants, markets, and microbreweries where you can reward yourself after completing the route.

Gastronomy tip: Check out La Mare au Diable, a popular local brewery in Sherbrooke where you can try Quebec’s finest craft beers paired with local dishes. The brewery’s selection includes both classic and seasonal brews, making it a perfect way to wrap up your journey.

Practical Tips for Cycling the Véloroute Gourmande

  • When to Go: The best time to explore the Véloroute Gourmande is between May and October when the weather is mild, and local producers are in full swing. Autumn is particularly beautiful, with vibrant fall foliage adding an extra layer of charm to your ride.

  • What to Pack: Pack light, but don’t forget essentials like water bottles, sunscreen, and a bike repair kit. If you plan to purchase local products along the way (and you will), bring a small cooler or insulated bag to keep your treats fresh.

  • Where to Stay: Many towns along the Véloroute Gourmande offer cozy BnB accommodations and boutique inns, perfect for resting after a day of cycling and feasting. Consider staying at local eco-friendly accommodations that offer farm-to-table meals to continue your gastronomic journey. There are also numerous campgrounds along the route for those who prefer to rough it and enjoy the great outdoors.

  • Bike Rentals: If you don’t have your own bike, don’t worry! Several companies along the route offer bike rentals and guided tours, ensuring that you can hit the trail without any hassle. If you are not a seasoned rider consider renting an electric bike that can help propel you through the landscape with minimal effort.
